Stokes Fun Fair allowed to return to Overton
THE owner of a fun fair has finally been told he can bring his rides to Overton.
The parish council has been deliberating about whether to allow Joe Stokes to bring Stokes Fun Fair to the village for months.
He was banned from setting up the fair in Sapley Lane playing fields eight years ago after the parish council received complaints about noise.
But at the full parish council meeting, the chairman, Tom Ridler, said: “We owe him a clear answer. It’s not fair to keep this going on.”
Six councillors voted in favour of allowing the fair to return to Overton, while four voted against.
Borough Cllr Ian Tilbury said: “I’m totally against it. It was nothing but trouble when it came before.”
He said the fair would be very close to some bungalows which house elderly residents.
He added: “It’s the worst place in Overton to put it. Who is going to police it because the police won’t?
“It’s asking for trouble. It was stopped before for a very good reason. We will get exactly the same problems again.”
However, Cllr Lucy Sloane Williams said the fair would provide entertainment for young people in the village.
It was agreed that Mr Stokes would be allowed to bring his fair to Overton for four days next year, on a trial basis, with various conditions imposed.
These included the introduction of a cash deposit, which would be returned if the site is left as it was before the fair arrived.
