Operation to repair shattered pelvis and back of Winklebury mum crushed by a car was a success says husband
A BRAVE mum-of-three, who saved her daughter’s life but was crushed against her Basingstoke home by an out-of-control car, has had an operation on her shattered pelvis and broken back.
As reported in The Gazette on Monday, Laura Percival, 26, flung her four-year-old daughter Freya to safety as the car careered towards them in Willoughby Way, Winklebury, last Thursday afternoon.
Mrs Percival saved her daughter’s life but sustained massive injuries having taken the full impact of the car. She was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, where she remains in the Intensive Care Unit.
On Monday, Mrs Percival had an operation to put metal rods into her pelvis and back, and her husband Gary, 31, said the surgery had been a success.
He told The Gazette: “She is still in a lot of pain but she is feeling more positive. They now think that she might also have broken a bone in her knee, but we are relieved that the operation went well.”
Mr Percival said he has taken Freya and their other children Harley, six, and Corey, who is nearly one, to visit their mother in hospital.
Neighbours and friends of the family have been fundraising to help the family financially through the next few weeks and months, and Mr Percival said he was grateful for their support.
He added: “At the moment, I am just trying to keep things as normal as possible for my family but it is nice to know that people are thinking of you.”
The driver of the Honda Civic which hit Mrs Percival is a 27-year-old woman who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs. She has now been bailed until November 12 pending further inquiries.
