Campaigners protest naked to expose 'the naked truth' about AWE Burghclere
7:00am Monday 16th September 2013 in Basingstoke
ACTIVISTS stripped off outside AWE Burghfield last week in an effort to “expose the naked truth” about nuclear weapons.
Seven protesters from campaigning groups Action AWE and Trident Ploughshares shed their clothes last Thursday, near the main gate of the site, to reveal the slogan ‘Exposing Britain’s W.M.Ds’ on their bare backs.
After being asked by Ministry of Defence police to move to a designated protest area, the activists complied.
Doctor Rownland Dye, a former nuclear scientist, who was participating in the action, said: "The police were more concerned about our almost naked bodies than about the nuclear weapons factory behind them.
“If something went wrong at AWE Burghfield then this could have serious long-term consequences for the local population.”
Fellow protester Shelley Qua said: “While £100billion is being spent on replacing Trident, a lot of people get their urgently-needed benefits cut and are not able to afford decent clothing or food.
“To me, this is much more offensive than our naked bodies.”
The protest was the latest in a series being organised by Action AWE and Trident Ploughshares outside AWE Burghfield and AWE Alder-maston.
A spokesman for AWE said: “We were aware of the short demonstration that took place outside AWE Burghfield on September 5, and there were no arrests.
“There was no disruption to staff or activity on site, and access to and from Burghfield was not hindered in any way.”
