Village cemetery is nearly full up
CEMETERY space is running out in Overton – and people may soon have to bury their loved ones in a new site miles away.
Parish council chairman Councillor Tom Ridler said there is just enough space in the village cemetery to last until 2019. Cllr Brian Langer said: “We ought to write to the borough council, as the borough itself is taking a view on where their cemetery should be as the one in Worting Road is full up.
“There’s talk of taking land next to the crema-torium. We ought to say that our own cemetery is getting full.”
He added the borough council needs to know, when planning for the borough’s cemetery provision, that people from Overton will need to be included in the figures for the future. He added: “We too will be joining the throng of people who will be using the new site adjacent to the crematorium in a few years time as we have no facilities in the village.”
Cllr Ridler said: “I think people would be pretty upset if we don’t have a cemetery, a viable cemetery, in the village. That’s reflected in their actions and the way in which the cemetery is looked after.”
