County council to debate 20mph speed limit for Whitchurch
HAMPSHIRE County Council is to consider whether Lynch Hill and Dances Lane are to be included in the 20mph speed limit proposals for Whitchurch.
There has been support from the local community for the speed limits within the town. However, concerns have been raised about the suitability of some roads, including Lynch Hill Park.
After initially being omitted from the speed limit plan, a local petition of 32 signatories called for Lynch Hill to be reinstated in the pilot scheme.
The council paper now recommends that Lynch Hill and Dances Lane be included in the pilot plan, and a decision was due to be made this week.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Councillor Keith Watts said: “The 20mph proposal in Whitchurch is entirely in the hands of Hampshire County Council and not in my remit as a borough councillor.
“But I believe that a decision to leave Lynch Hill Park out of the 20mph zone would be perverse, precisely because that residential road is attractive to through traffic by-passing the town centre.
“I also believe that the zone should extend beyond the cemetery in Church Street instead of ending before the dangerous bend by the church.”
