THOUSANDS of visitors flocked to an annual lambing event – and Basingstoke schoolgirl Hana Flooks, pictured, was just one of the many who got to handle a lamb.

About 6,000 visitors attended the lambing event at Sparsholt College, at which shepherd John Garrett provided a running commentary explaining the lambing process and taking questions from visitors.

He was assisted at the event by agricultural students from the college, near Winchester, who are learning about lambing as part of their studies.

Event organiser Philip Holroyd-Smith said: “I can’t imagine there are many opportunities for people to get so very close to a new-born lamb, and to actually witness one being born is incredibly special indeed.

“There were a number of occasions last Saturday when visitors let out a collective ‘aaaaah’ as they saw a new lamb arrive.”
