THE BOROUGH’S war heroes are set to come together to mark the 6th Armed Forces Day at a flag raising ceremony led by the new Mayor of Basingstoke.

Servicemen and women, past and present, and the general public have all been invited to attend the event at the Civic Offices, in London Road on June 23 at 10.30am.

Armed Forces Day aims to raise public awareness of the contribution made to the UK by those who serve and have served in the armed forces.

It also gives the nation an opportunity to show its support for veterans, serving troops, service families and cadets.

The event on June 23, which has been organised in partnership with the Basingstoke and Overton Royal British Legion branch, will see the raising of the Armed Forces Day flag.

Basingstoke Mayor, Councillor Roger Gardiner said: “Armed Forces Day will be especially poignant this year as we are also marking the centenary of the start of the Great War and the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

“I would like to welcome any borough residents to join me as we remember the work of our armed forces and to show support to those who are currently serving.”

Any veterans who wish to have a veteran’s badge presented by the Mayor can contact Bill Sample on 01256 357666 and are asked to leave their name, address, contact number, service and regiment.

A centenary civic service to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War will also be held on August 4 from 7pm at St Michael’s Church, in Church Square.
