HE STYLED himself as Boring Dave – but there has been nothing boring about Dave Brown when it comes to his hairdos in recent weeks.

The 52-year-old engineer, who works for Motorola, on Viables Industrial Estate, Basingstoke, has been coming to work with some flamboyant hairstyles – thanks to Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) hairdressing and barbering students.

The interesting looking barnets have all been sported by Dave to raise money for the UK’s main heart and lung hospital Papworth Hospital, in Cambridgeshire, where Dave’s wife Sue, 52, had a life-saving single lung transplant in January.

“Sue had a deteriorating lung condition for many years and had weeks left if she hadn’t received the transplant,” said Dave.

Through his JustGiving website, Dave has so far raised more than £2,200 in his efforts to raise £2,500 for the hospital, on his Boring Dave Brown's Papworth Hospital Charity page.

Dave said: “The money will help research to increase the number of potential donated lungs and to extend the life expectancy of lung transplant patients.”

Explaining the name of his charity page, Dave, who lives in Fleet, said: “Well, I’m a boring, middle aged man with a receding hair line and bald patch on top.”

However, the students thought Dave was anything but boring and he seemed to relish the various hairstyles they came up with.

These ranged from a fetching pink and blue number with a zigzag design, to multi-coloured stripes, to having his hair bleached blond, to his most recent look, which had tiger stripes complete with the Papworth Hospital Charity logo.

Bash Thomas, 18, studying for her Level 2 diploma in barbering, said: “Dave’s been brilliant. He’s let us get on with it and we’ve enjoyed working with him – it’s been nice and it’s been for a very good cause.”

Dave was full of praise for the students, who rose to the challenge of coming up with new and imaginative hairstyles over four weeks.

“They’ve been absolutely fantastic and full of enthusiasm – they’ve been brilliant.” To make a donation, visit www.justgiving.com/BoringDave/
