ACTIVITIES to support people in the borough who are suffering from early stage dementia will now take place every week at a Basingstoke community centre.

The morning and afternoon sessions at Viables Community Centre, which will cost £4 with an option of lunch for an additional £3.50, will run every Friday at the community centre, in The Harrow Way between 10am and 12pm and from 1pm to 3pm.

The sessions will be run by Viables Community Association in partnership with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire Wellbeing Services and supported by Hampshire County Council, Barchester, the British Red Cross and Basingstoke Sports Centre.

Activities on offer at the sessions include games, arts, crafts and memory lane activities such as conversations, reminiscence, music, dance and television.

In addition, exercise classes organised by Basingstoke Sports Centre will improve movement, strength and balance and a quiet room for massages will be provided by the British Red Cross.

Councillor Cathy Osselton, borough Cabinet member for partnerships, said: “It is so important for those diagnosed with dementia to maintain their interests for as long as possible; the memory club provides varied activities and social contact for those residents that need it the most.”
