UNSUNG heroes who go the extra mile to help elderly people living in their communities are set to be recognised.

Hampshire County Council is urging residents to honour people who contribute to the community in which they live by nominating them for a Good Neighbour award.

The awards, which are now in their 11th year, have already seen nearly 600 people receive appreciation for the work they do to help older people remain independent and live comfortably and safely.

They are held in conjunction with the county council’s partners – Age Concern Hampshire, Brendoncare Club Hampshire, Carers Together, the Good Neighbours Support Service and the Royal Voluntary Service.

Nominees can range from an individual who helps someone with the chores they are unable to do for themselves, to a group of volunteers that provide transport to enable older people to take part in social activities.

Hampshire County Council chairman Councillor Colin Davidovitz, who is hosting this year’s awards, said: “The Good Neighbour awards offer an opportunity to pay tribute to neighbours and volunteers who give others that extra bit of help on a regular basis throughout the year.

“Good deeds go unnoticed far too often.

“This is why it is so important for us to pay tribute to those who lend help and support in the Hampshire area.

“If you would like to say a special thank you to someone who regularly goes that extra mile for you or your community then you should nominate them for a Good Neighbour award this year.

“These individuals most likely don’t think twice about the wonderful help they give to others, but they deserve our thanks.”

You can nominate a Good Neighbour by filling out the form online at hants.gov.uk/goodneighbour awards.

The closing date for applications is Monday, February 2, and winners of an award, along with the people who nominated them, will be invited to a special ceremony in Winchester in April.
