RESIDENTS in Dummer will learn more about the men from the village who lost their lives during World War One.

Sheila Harden, who lives at Tower Hill, Dummer, has spent the last year researching the 13 men who sacrificed their lives to fight for the country during the four year conflict between 1914 and 1918.

The 63-year-old, along with fellow villager Doug Bone, has trawled through records to find enough information to create profiles for each man and is working on profiles for other men with a connection to the village who died in the war.

The profiles of each man from Dummer who did not return home from the war will be displayed in the porch of All Saints’ Church around the date of their death, between now and 2018.

Each profile includes a biography on the person and a history of the regiment they served in as well as their involvement in the conflict.

Sheila told The Gazette: “I have lived in the village for 15 years but I don’t know the names. They get read out at every Remembrance Sunday but as time goes on, no one knows anything about them or their connection to the village.

“It brings it to life a bit. It has been a very interesting experience and it is something I do as a hobby.”

Julian Jones, chairman of Dummer Parish Council, added: “It is so important to remember those from the village who sacrificed their lives during the war.”
