YOU never know what sort of surprise you will get at Pandora in Festival Place.

But a grandmother about to celebrate her 70 anniversary this weekend, certainly got a rather special shock – her daughter – who had travelled all the way to Basingstoke from Canada.

Today an unsuspecting Margaret Ness, accompanied by her husband Alex, went to collect a mother-and-daughter charm and a bracelet, which was supposedly arranged by her daughter Jane Pedersen.

But it was just a rouse to entice Margaret into the store for an emotional reunion.

Jane, who works as a communications operator for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, had travelled from her Langley home in British Columbia, to personally deliver the jewellery bought at a Pandora store in Canada, It was the first time for Jane to be in Basingstoke for 15 years “I just had not been able to afford to fly home to visit,” explained Jane, who had discussed buying her mum a gift for her special birthday over the phone.

“She said she loves Pandora and would like a bracelet.

“I told her that I would buy in Canada and have her collect it at the Pandora store in Basingstoke.”

But instead Jane delivered her gifts in person having arrived at Heathrow at 10.30am this morning and driving straight to Basingstoke.

Prior to this she had let on with the Festival Place store about her plan.

Store manager Samantha Stevens and her team were only too happy to help.

“We only found out about Jane’s plan yesterday and we wanted to make the occasion really special.

“We were all very excited and just before she arrived our hearts were racing.”

Samantha brought Jane over to her mum disguised in sunglasses and a Pandora jacket to hand over the gifts.

Samantha said: “With Jane behind her mum, I told Margaret ‘just to let you know, I have got something else to show you’.

“Margaret turned round and when they saw each other there was a lovely reaction – we all had tears.”

After receiving flowers from Samantha and her team, Margaret, who lives at Emma Court, in the Top of The Town, said: “It’s been amazing – the best present I could ever have, seeing my daughter.”

Looking at her husband Alex, Margaret who celebrates her birthday on Sunday, said: “I was wondering why he had a jacket on. He kept this a secret, which couldn’t have been easy.”

Beaming with a bright smile, the former PA said she thought her gifts were lovely.

Jane who will be spending 10 days in the UK, and will be joined by her husband in time for a birthday meal at Mama Mia Restaurant, in Hartley Wintney, said: “Everyone at Pandora has been fantastic.

“Alex and I had been planning this for a long time. How we managed to pull it off without mum knowing I don’t know, because she’s not silly, she’s very smart. Happy birthday mum.”
