VETERINARY practices in Basingstoke are taking action against blood sucking ticks by joining a television presenter’s new project.

Various local practices are taking part in the Big Tick Project run by Chris Packham and the University of Bristol.

The new initiative aims to track the rise of the tick population in the UK and find out how many carry Lyme disease – a serious and debilitating illness that can cause long-term health problems in dogs and people.

Dog owners can take their pets to participating practices in Basingstoke for a tick check and advice about innovations in effective tick control. Practices include Brunswick Place vets, in Cranbourne Lane, Companion Care Veterinary Surgery, at Hatch Warren Retail Park, Barn Animal Hospital, in Great Binfields Road, Old Basing and Donnington Grove Vet Group, in Newchurch Road, Tadley.

Any ticks found on dogs will be collected and sent to Bristol University laboratories to help advance the knowledge of tick-borne disease.
