A BASINGSTOKE football coach who set up a club for young people has been recognised for his hard work.

Daren Bavister has been announced as a winner of a Halifax Giving Extra Award, and is one of 66 local winners from across the UK.

He was selected by the local panel of the award scheme for his efforts in setting up and running a thriving football club for young people in the town.

Now in its third year, the awards recognise people who bring communities together, such as charity fundraisers, sports coaches and community volunteers.

Daren set up the club six years ago and has worked phenomenally hard, volunteering his time to grow the club which now gives 200 boys and girls the opportunity to play football.

Daren said: “I was surprised but also delighted to win a Halifax Giving Extra Award. It was such an honour to just be nominated, so I am hugely proud to have actually won.”

Kirsty Thomas, community ambassador for Halifax Hants and Berks, added: “The work that Daren has done for the community is outstanding and truly deserves this recognition. He has truly gone the extra mile for people in our community and we are delighted to recognise this.”

All 66 winners will each receive £300 in Supercheque vouchers and will be put forward to be chosen as one of seven regional winners, who will be announced by the end of February.

They will each receive £5,000 to make a further difference in their community.

Russel Galley, group director of Halifax Community Bank, said: “Halifax is committed to bringing communities closer together. We believe we should give extra back to people like Daren who are pivotal to driving positive and lasting change.

We’re proud that Daren is one of our Halifax Giving Extra Award winners.”

Thousands of nominations were received for the award which were made online or in branches throughout October and November.
