A CARER jumped into action with her newly-learned first aid skills when she was caught up in the aftermath of a man being hit by a bus.

Charlotte-Louise Davey intended to have a short shopping trip to Morrisons on Saturday night but when she arrived, she saw a man in severe pain by the side of the road.

It turned out the man, believed to be in his 40 or 50s, had been hit by a bus as he it was believed he had been swinging his arms around, eventually being clipped by the vehicle near the mini-roundabout at the entrance to Morrisons in Worting Road.

Charlotte-Louise, from South Ham, sprang into action to help out, using first aid skills she has learnt in her first year in her role as a care assistant at Bluebird Care Hook and Kingsclere.

She said: “Unfortunately he was drunk and swinging his arms around and the bus clipped him. I supported him with another man while two other gentlemen dealt with the traffic.

"He was able to move right arm and shoulder but he was in agony on left side, possibly a collar bone injury. He was Type 1 diabetic and didn't have his insulin on him so just myself and another man waited and supported him until the police and an ambulance arrived.”

Kim Teagle, recruitment manager at Bluebird Care, added: "Charlotte-Louise just put into practice what she learned from the training we provided her with. She just asked him all the right questions."

Charlotte-Louise added: "I've been able to help a few people luckily but this one brought the most shock. Hopefully he's okay now.

"But credit to the gentleman who was with me supporting the man and the two guys controlling the traffic as he lay in the road too."

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed it received a call of a man being hit by a bus but when paramedics arrived at the scene, it was confirmed he had been clipped.

The man was taken to Basingstoke hospital for treatment for neck, shoulder and elbow injuries.
