SOCIAL media safety was just one of the topics young people have learnt more about.

Year six pupils, all aged between ten and 11-years-old, from across Basingstoke and Deane attended sessions under the Think Safe initiative.

They spent time with a number of organisations and charities, including Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire Fire and Rescue, the Royal Military Police, the British Transport Police, Network Rail, Sainsbury’s and You Trust, learning through a series of interactive scenarios.

Other issues covered included: keeping computers in family rooms where activity can be monitored, thinking about images and videos before sharing and avoiding using webcams unless talking to close family or friends.

Wider safety issues were also explored including: how to respond if a stranger approaches, how to help a casualty and the importance of identifying potentially harmful products.

Councillor Simon Bound, chairman of the Safer North Hampshire Partnership, said: “We are grateful to all of the organisations who volunteered their time to give young people experience of important life skills which could, one day, help to save their life, or someone else’s.”
