Study says Tesco ‘unlikely to harm’ town centre

Tesco’s controversial plans for an edge-of-town store at Romsey have received a significant boost from two important reports.

Test Valley Borough Council planning officers have reported that they will make no objection to the scheme on policy grounds.

This follows the publication of a study commissioned by the council from consultants Nathaniel Litchfield and Partners (NLP) which said the proposals to build a 35,000 sq ft store on the Broadlands estate south of the bypass would have no significant impact on the town centre.

STAR welcomes this news as it is what we have been saying all along the fact that Waitrose gets the go ahead with no arguments just goes to show how narrow minded a certain generation is in Romsey no matter what people think things have to and do change and that goes for our not so little town Romsey is growing and needs the facilities to sustain it

Why would say anything differently.
TVBC are letting their community down - FACT
Looks like another example of how dirty the world of politics is.

Some research by a member of the Romsey and District Chamber of Commerce suggests that there is a close professional relationship between Nathaniel Lichfield Partnership (NLP), who are appointed TVBC Retail Consultants and Tesco. I would suggest that to the 'man in the street' this is a close and prejudiced relationship which skews NLP's advice to TVBC in favour of Tesco.

Development Programme
Our role involves assisting Tesco to deliver new and extended stores across the UK, from ‘Extra’ stores in complex town centre developments, to ‘Express’ convenience stores.
Strategic Advice
NLP also updates Tesco on changes in planning policy and advises on implications for their trading operations and development aspirations.

The NLP website also refers to Hounslow....
NLP has secured planning permission for 9,000 sqm of new retail development at the former Hounslow House/Black Arrow Site in Hounslow Town Centre on behalf of Tesco Stores Ltd.
The comprehensive development will provide the centre with a new anchor superstore and additional retail floorspace next to the bus station. The development will also create local employment and provide significant benefits to the movement network including public realm enhancement, a new pedestrian link and town centre car park.
We are delighted to have secured permission for this development which will transform this currently underutilised gateway site and significantly improve the retail offer to meet Hounslow’s role as an identified Metropolitan Centre.
