Vintage fundraiser for Jessie
3:22pm Friday 9th August 2013 in Romsey
A FUNDRAISER for a Hampshire children's cancer unit will be held tomorrow (Saturday August 10).
Lisa Day, whose second cousin Jessica Vardy has a rare form of cancer, is behind the Sparkys Vintage Fair fundraiser at Romsey Town Hall between 9.30am and 5pm.
Lisa said: “Jessica was diagnosed with a rhabdoid tumour in December 2012. This type of cancer is very, very, rare and only two children in England are diagnosed with it each year. Jessica had a lump underneath her left arm and she had scans and X-rays and doctors found the tumour. She's being having treatment since it was discovered and during the next six weeks Jessica will be undergoing radiotherapy at Southampton General Hospital.”
Jessica who is seven and lives at Bishop's Waltham has been treated at the General's Piam Brown children's cancer ward.
Lisa said today's Vintage Fair has two purposes, one to raise awareness about rhabdoid cancer and the other is to collect donations for the hospital.
Items at the fair will include lace, old dresses and even ex police uniforms -some goods dating back to the 1930s. There will be about 14 stalls at the event including sales of vintage-style fair cakes.
“We need as much support as we can get to raise awareness about this cancer. It can happen to anyone. Doctors and nurses do a marvellous job down at Southampton General. Nurses go above and beyond their duties. I hope people will support us. We did a fundraiser at the town hall in May and raised £114 and I would like to say a big thank you to the shops, businesses and people of Romsey for supporting Sparkys Vintage then and I hope they will do it again,” added Lisa pointing out that the vintage fair will include two vintage American police cars that will be parked up outside Romsey Town Hall.
