Organisers of this year’s Romsey Beggars Fair are desperately seeking a venue for one of the event’s biggest acts – Southampton Ukulele Jam.

“There are at least 20 of them in the group and at the moment we have not got a big enough venue to accommodate them,” said chairman of the organising committee, Delsia Bartlett Alternative venues such as the Abbey United Reformed Church and Romsey Town Hall are already booked and organisers say the band are unlikely to come unless they have an indoor venue, in case of rain This year’s one-day event will be on Saturday, July 12.

A new venue for performers this year will be Rum’s Eg Gallery, in Bell Street. Other venues include the Star Inn, the Old House at Home, the Olive Tree, the Tudor Rose, the White Horse Hotel and King John’s House Garden.

In addition to a host of musical acts the event will feature Salisbury-based children’s entertainers, Ticklish Allsorts and Hand to Mouth Theatre group, with Martin Brindle and Sue Eaton, whose new puppet show is called “Flight of Fantasy”.

“We will have about 90 acts, some old favourites and some new,” said Nigel. Amongst newcomers to the Beggars Fair,this year will be Portsmouth reggae band, Emiliyah and the Mighty Z All Stars and Southampton-based folk and blues band, The Sweetchunks.

There will also be a “surprise showcase performer” in the Cornmarket, revealed Delsia.

Romsey Youth Council will also put up-and-coming talent on stage at the War Memorial Park.

Organisers of the event, which is funded through programme sales, sponsorship, donations and grants, are already looking ahead to sponsorship of the 2015 fair and anyone who would like to support them is asked to go online to beggars-fair.org.uk for more details.
