The Lantern Parade at Romsey’s Late Night Shopping evening has now become a popular annual event and this year’s will have a theme for the first time – pantomimes.

Last year’s parade comprised a colourful array of around 350 lanterns, accompanied by a band and a choir, and entertained the crowds who had come along to enjoy the arrival of Father Christmas.

Heorganisers hope experienced lantern-makers from local schools, community and art groups will be joining in again and passing on their skils in the run-up to this year’s event on December 5.

Lantern novices will have the opportunity to make their own bespoke creations under expert guidance at workshops to be conducted from now until November.

This includes a public workshop on Sunday, November 2 at the Appletree Centre (behind Romsey Library) from 10am to 1pm. The cost, which includes materials will be £3.50 per person. Spaces are limited and booking is recommended. .

The Romsey Community Lantern Project is run by volunteers and running costs have previously been met from donations, including generous sponsorship from local businesses and local authority grants.

The project is inviting local businesses to contribute again this year - for £25 a to make a bespoke lantern with your Company logo, that will form part of the parade, to acknowledge each contribution.

Business sponsorship forms and further information can be obtained by email from romseylanterns@gmail.com.

The organisers are also keen to hear rom anyone who would prepared to be a marshal to help guide the parade. Further information is available from Pamela@shadow26.plus.com or 01794 501605.

Test Valley Brass and the Mountbatten Community Choir will again accompany the parade, and the Mayor of Test Valley and Mayor and Mayoress of Romsey have already confirmed that they will be in the leading party.
