PEOPLE in Sherfield English will be recalling the life of a famous Great War artist during the village’s Remembrance weekend commemorations.
Official Canadian war artist Algernon Talmage who lived in the village and is buried in St Leonard’s Churchyard will be remembered in a display of First World War memorabilia at the Church on Saturday between 10.30am and 4pm. The display is part of the collection of First World War artefacts from the museum at St Edward’s School in the village.
Second World War veterans will lay wreaths to honour the fallen during Sunday’s Remembrance Day service which starts at 10.45am.
Letters from the Somme will be read by descendants of the soldiers from the village who died in battle and a roll call of the men who never returned from the frontline will be read out by Sherfield English Parish Council chairman Graham Leigh as crosses are placed in their honour.
Service organiser Eric Hounslow said Saturday’s exhibition is worth going to see.
“Artefacts recovered from the Somme together with medals, poems and poignant letters from the trenches will be on display,” he said.
