IT MIGHT not all be fun in the sun.

That is the warning from weather experts as temperatures in Hampshire threaten to break through the 30C mark today.

Forecasters at the Met Office issued a level 2 heat-health alert yesterday as the heatwave that began at the weekend continued.

Several health organisations and charities have also issued warnings about the dangers posed by the sudden heatwave in Hampshire.

St John Ambulance have issued advice to residents in Hampshire about the risks faced by heatstroke and heat exhaustion.

Public Health England has given advice on staying safe in the heat while the Royal Voluntary Service urged people to be on the look out for their older neighbours who could suffer.

The warnings come as the region sees baking hot temperatures this week, with highs today expected to reach 30C.

Clive James, St John Ambulance training officer, said: "Extreme heat can be dangerous, particularly for the very young and old, but by being prepared you can spot the early warning signs and potentially be the difference between life and death in an emergency.

"Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are the most serious problems that can develop when the mercury soars so it’s essential that people can spot the signs, such as headache and dizziness, and get them somewhere cool and rehydrated as soon as possible."

Terry Blair-Stevens, consultant in health improvement at Public Health England South East, added: “This summer we’re urging people to stay cool and hydrated in the heat. For most people the rise in temperature is really nothing to worry about and most advice for staying safe in the heat is common sense and simple to follow.

“For some people, particularly older people, those with underlying health conditions and those with young children, summer heat can bring real health risks.

"During hot weather some people may not be able to adapt to the extra strain hot weather will put on their bodies and may feel the ill-effects. It is important to keep an eye on those at-risk and if you’re able, offer help to stay cool and hydrated."
