Plans have been revealed for a new services on a Hampshire motorway.

Developers want to build a new services on the M3.

They have unveiled plans for the scheme which will be between the existing services at Winchester and Fleet.

But the proposal has come under fire from local councillors.

Plans have been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) by Irish firm Applegreen to build at a site called Kennel Farm.

An environmental scoping application has been received by the council from the subsidiary firm of filling station company Petrogas.

The firm wants to build on Kennel Farm on the southern side of the M3 (before the motorway bridge) to the south west of Basingstoke.

If successful, the facility would include nearly 300 car parking spaces, fuelling stations, a service area amenity building, a picnic area and a drainage scheme.

The site is different to the Kennel Farm off the A30 where 300 homes will be built.

Councillors say the plans are “unacceptable” and will fight them.

Deputy leader of BDBC and Hatch Warren and Beggarwood ward Cllr Terri Reid said: “The traffic around this area will go up once again, considering the 38 vans and lorries that already leave the digestion plant that we were against, and it is a massive concern.

“The fact of the matter isThe Department of Transport give guidelines on how far apart service stations need to be and in this instance with one in Fleet and another in Winchester, it breaches these guidelines.

“There is no need for this service station and the traffic it will bring to our residents and it’s wholly unacceptable.”

The two services along this part of the M3 which are closest can be found in Shroner Wood, Winchester and Fleet.

The proposed Kennel Farm site is around 11 miles from Winchester and 17 miles from Fleet, which, according to GoogleMaps, should take drivers less than 30 minutes to drive between.

Department of Transport guidelines state the maximum distance between service stations should be 28 miles and the equivalent of 30 minutes driving time.

Cllr Dan Putty, who also represents Hatch Warren and Beggarwood, said: “It is unnecessary to have this service station here as it brings up so many problems for the constituents.

“It is not only going to create a lot of noise, the number of vehicles will rise again.

“If nobody lived in this area, fine. But they do and we have a duty to protect the people we represent.”

Applegreen did not respond for a request to comment.
