A HAMPSHIRE road is to remain shut for another month following complication during planned works.

Southern Water applied to Hampshire County Council to extend the current closure of Stanbridge Lane near Romsey until the end of April. The work was scheduled to be completed by yesterday, March 31, but unexpected subsoil conditions mean a change is needed to the planned method of construction which requires more time.

After looking into the issue the council granted the extension as it believes opening the road temporarily and returning to the works at a later date was not a viable option.

The council noted that extending the closure to complete the work reduces the likelihood of burst pipes in the intervening period, and reduces the duration of the work to minimise overall disruption for residents and road users.

Thus, the council has agreed an extension, providing Southern Water work extended hours to expedite the works, and keep residents and the local Parish Council updated.

Some works will continue until mid-May, but the remaining work can be completed using temporary traffic signals. The county council says it wo;; ensure that other works planned for the area over this period are rescheduled to avoid clashes.
