HUNDREDS of spectators braved torrential rain and got into the carnival spirit for an annual event.

The Wheelers Travel Procession saw scores of floats pass through Romsey as part of this year’s Romsey Carnival.

The wet and windy weather did not put off the locals who turned out in force to show their support for the event.

Of the scores of residents to brave the weather, mum-of-three Julie Wallington said the event was great fun to watch.

"We turn out every year so the weather was not going to stop us this time," the Romsey local said, who was at the event with her children and husband.

"It is always great fun and the children love it.

"I also think we have been spoilt by the weather over the past couple of years for the event - this is definitely the true reflection of an English summer!"

Another to don a raincoat and line the streets was Mark James.

The 49-year-old said he and his family always enjoy attending the event.

He added: "It is always nice to see the floats because you know a lot of effort has gone in to every one.

"And, if those taking part are going to get wet, then we should too!"

This year floats included a scene from The Wizard of Oz, an open top bus parade celebrating Romsey Town FC's cup winning year and a number of mischievous local Brownies painted blue and dressed as Smurfs.

Spectators were also treated to a new experience as the procession reverted to the original route used back in the 1980’s.

This meant onlookers were able to view the floats from Bell Street and Church Street, as well as Malmesbury Road, Alma Road and The Hundred.

Several road closures were in place during the event and the Romsey Carnival Committee apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Last week the carnival was launched with its annual Bed Race. Scores of locals entered the event to race beds around the market town.

That event was also battered by monsoon-like downpours, but it too was extremely well attended.
