UNIVERSITY experts are advising future students “don’t panic”

Professors at Solent University say clearing – the system which allows school-leavers to find a university place – isn’t just for students who don’t quite get the grades they wanted – they might have done better than expected, decide on a different university, or change their mind completely about going to university.

Solent will also be running a hotline open from manned by trained staff and students, some who have been through clearing themselves, from 7.30am to 7.30pm today. Students will be able to call, email, live chat, or use any of the main social media platforms to get in touch.

Southampton University’s head of admissions Nick Hull said: “Our Clearing and Adjustment hotline number this year is 023 8059 8989 – phones will be answered by staff and students who can provide advice and guidance.

“Students who are looking to confirm their place (those who get the grades they need) should ring 023 8059 7004.”

And the university gives five tips to avoid stress: Plan ahead – decide which universities you are going to contact. Think about why you made your first choice – what made your first choice stand out from the rest? Create a shortlist – make a list of your top five or top ten universities and ensure these cover a range of different grade requirements. If you made your application through a school or college, talk to your teachers and advisors and check if any of your shortlisted universities have places in your preferred subject and if your grades are suitable.

And last but not least – don’t panic. Stay calm and remember that if you don’t get the grades you wanted there are lots of great opportunities through Clearing. Thousands of students a year make a success out of their clearing choices and have a really positive experience.
