A RAILWAY shutdown is set to leave Romsey residents without a train service on Sunday.

Operators South Western Railway have announced that buses will replace trains between the town and Eastleigh as the firm takes out major works across Eastleigh, Southampton and the New Forest this weekend.

The buses will also go via Southampton Central as hundreds of trains are effected throughout the day.

It will leave commuters facing a host of travel disruption as the festive season gets closer.

Across Hampshire, travellers are braced for delays, despite SWR assuring customers that fast buses will be travelling in locations including Eastleigh, Southampton and Bournemouth.

Through the county, lines will be closed between Southampton Airport Parkway and Brockenhurst for the day of ‘major work’.

It comes as the operators announced other major work throughout Christmas, starting on December 24 and running until New Year’s Day.

The line between Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway will also be closed as a result of an £8 million scheme.

Chris Loder, head of service strategy for SWR said: “We encourage passengers to avoid travelling on Christmas Eve if they can and to be prepared for longer journey times between Christmas and New Year.
