STUDENTS from Romsey School joined others from around the county to learn about the technology behind an Italian great.

More than 20 students from four schools attended the apprenticeship open day at the Ferrari south coast dealership, Meridian Modena in the New Forest.

Meridian worked with with Engineering UK to create a day which highlighted the Ferrari North Europe Apprenticeship programme for 16 to 19-year-olds.

Students had the chance to find out about the two-year apprenticeship roles available at Modena, which begin in September.

Chris Stephens, assistant head teacher at Romsey School, said: “The best thing about the apprenticeship open day for the pupils was that it was a hands on experience.

“As a school, we actively want to promote science, technology, engineering and math opportunities with all of our pupils, so it was a pleasure for our pupils to be hosted by Meridian Modena.

“With support from the Ferrari team, the pupils got to take off and put back on, brake discs designed for Ferrari and had the opportunity to examine some engines.

“The pupils also had a display surrounding some of the interior engine components that they could study in more detail, should they take on the apprenticeship.

“The pupils were really impressed with the amount of staff from Meridian Modena that were available to talk to.”

Aside from having the chance to talk to staff, the Romsey pupils had an opportunity to sit in some of the latest models and see what technology had been installed in the super cars, including one that was custom built for the race track.

Mr Stephens added: “The pupils really enjoyed this open day, as they were able to have one of their dreams realised by examining the super cars up close and are seriously considering this option of an apprenticeship as one of their future career choices.”

Glenn Butt, managing director at Meridian Modena in Lyndhurst, said: “We were delighted to host our first ever Ferrari apprenticeship day.

“We had huge interest on the day with students interested to apply for one of two apprentice roles currently available.

“The successful applicants will start in September and will work alongside Ferrari master technicians.”
