OAP falls for explosion con
DETECTIVES are hunting two men who got away with an undisclosed amount of cash after tricking an 89-year-old Romsey man.
Officers say the victim was unhurt in the incident at Mainstone on Thursday of last week and he was able to give them a good description of one offender, who is known to have made off on foot towards Mainstone Bridge on the A3090.
A police spokesman said the unnamed pensioner answered the door to a man, who told him there had been an explosion in Romsey and water supplies had been contaminated.
After telling the unsuspecting pensioner that he needed to turn on all the taps in the house, the offender was allowed in.
While he was pretending to check the water supplies, another man is believed to have got into the property and removed cash.
After the incident, two suspects, were spotted walking near Mainstone Bridge.
The man who knocked on the pensioner's door is described as being of stocky build, with a tanned complexion and short dark hair. He is said to have been 5ft 10ins to 6ft tall and aged 30-40. He was clean-shaven and was wearing a light blue or green short-sleeved shirt and faded blue jeans.
