Jeweller fined after customer walked into glass door
After the prosecution of a High Street jeweller, Test Valley Borough Council is reminding businesses of the importance of complying with health and safety legislation.
Signet Trading Ltd was recently found guilty of two health and safety contraventions, and fined £4,400 for the two offences, with costs in excess of £6,000 awarded after a customer walked into a glass door at H. Samuel in Andover.
The court awarded the injured person £750 in compensation.
Test Valley Borough Council took out the prosecution following an accident investigation by a Health and Safety Inspector of the Environmental Health Service.
The inspector found that the door was not fitted with safety glass and did not have any markings to indicate when it was closed.
Peter Boulton, cabinet member for the environment, said: "In most circumstances, environmental health staff will give advice to businesses to ensure that they are complying with health and safety legislation. However, in the interests of public safety, the council had little choice but to prosecute on this occasion.
"The public have a right to feel confident that they can enter premises that are complying with health and safety requirements and businesses must understand that when they put the public at risk then they could well end up answering to the courts.
"This should serve as a message to other businesses to take health and safety matters seriously."
