Hotel scheme in spotlight
PLANS to turn Romsey's former Casa Bodega into a 10-bedroomed hotel go before Test Valley councillors on Tuesday.
The southern area planning committee is being advised to turn the scheme down, but the owners of the restaurant, recently renamed the Cromwell Arms, say there is a constant need for hotel rooms.
"Throughout the time I've been here, I have had people calling to ask for accommodation," said co-owner, Mark Walter.
"Lots of things go on at Broadlands and there are big events nearby, such as Southampton Boat Show and the autojumble at Beaulieu and there is not a lot in the way of good hotel accommodation right through Test Valley. There is also a demand from people who come to fish the River Test."
There are no objections from Romsey or Romsey Extra councils to the addition of 10 bedrooms, but residents of two nearby properties have objected.
An officers' report says the plan is against various policies and would harm the character of the Grade II listed building and "neither preserve nor enhance the conservation area".
The restaurant had long been the Horse and Jockey pub, but its use was changed to a veterinary surgery in the 1970s, reverting to that of a pub in the 1990s and permission was granted for extensions in 1999.
There is support for the proposal from the tourist industry with research by Tourism South East showing occupancy levels within the Romsey area to be generally high.
Mr Walter said the change of name and style to a gastro pub had been a success.
"Business has been very, very good and we are extremely busy," he said.
