Who will pick up bill for ‘free’ swimming lessons
GOVERNMENT proposals for a sporting revolution to include free swimming have received a cautious reception from councillors in the Test Valley.
Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, announced a raft of fitness-related initiatives in June that would be a lasting legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in a bid to make the UK a world-leading sporting nation.
But the borough council's cabinet member for leisure, Councillor Caroline Nokes, said: "Of course, any proposals to encourage more children and over 60s to become more active are welcome, but the costs shouldn't fall on local council taxpayers.
"This initiative is to address national issues about health and obesity and the scheme should be wholly funded by central government. It is regrettable that we are still waiting for the details to be released. As soon as we have confirmation that it will be fully funded, the council will be taking it forward with enthusiasm.
"We already recognise the benefits for residents of a more active lifestyle and we will want to take advantage of the Government's scheme when full details are known.
"In the meantime, we will be continuing to work with local health care professionals through our Sport and Physical Activity Alliance, to co-ordinate our activities wherever we can."

I wouldn't be surprised if the local taxpayer will have to pay for it. Take buses for example. Who's going to pay for that? Wre've had our council tax increased by quite enough and the man on the street has to put up with it, otherwise they get thrown into jail for not paying. It costs nearly a fiver to swim at the Quays and you get slapped with parking charges outside at the same time. Hope fully that won't be the case in Romsey. I expect I am going to start annoying people, like that delightful woman who wrote that letter about me in the Advertiser. What a shame!!

Mellow - you're beginning to worry me! Wellow, Rockingham and now The Hatchet - you sure you're not stalking Mrs Nokes? You seem to know a lot about her and her family. Bit dodgy! You're arousing suspicion!

Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was she who objected to the Nero facade being blue - bit like that tactical Lib/Lab chap from Baddesley who objects to the Romsey Con Club having more than one blue light at Christmas!

The bloke with an IQ of a plastic bucket? I've wondered what happened to him. As I don't get involved in local politics much anymore, it still amuses me how those of an orange nature get their knickers in a twist. Even more so now they're not doing so well in the polls under that wet blanket Clegg.
