NHS Trust urges young Wintonians to get tested for sexually transmitted infections
'TWAS the season to get frisky in Winchester, according to new research.
A survey released last month by Solent NHS Trust said one in six people aged 15-24 in Winchester would have unprotected sex or a one-night-stand over the Christmas holidays.
It also claimed nearly a third of people in the city would not remember having sex, would have sex with multiple people in one night or have unprotected sex with a stranger.
The research came as health experts were urging young men and women to get tested for Chlamydia as part of a nationwide education and awareness programme.
Chlamydia is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK, and can cause infertility in both sexes.
Rebecca Perrin, Chlamydia lead nurse at the trust, said: “Because for the majority of people this infection has no symptoms, many believe they are free of infection when in fact they may be living with Chlamydia.
“Despite the lack of symptoms Chlamydia is easily tested for and easy to treat, it is important that young people understand that the test is non-invasive and that they see testing as an opportunity to look after their health and that of their partners.”
