Bishop's Waltham residents give litter bugs the sack

Volunteers gathered 100 sacks of litter in two hours
IN Bishop's Waltham a community effort saw volunteers gather 100 sacks of litter in less than two hours.
Wearing high-visibility jackets and armed with litter-pickers and bin bags, 50 residents ventured into hedgerows and roadside ditches on March 9 for the town's Stop the Drop day.
Organiser and parish Councillor, Robert Shields, said: “It is disgraceful that our lovely town has been blighted in this way. Some of the litter was quite disgusting, including large quantities of dog-poo bags thrown away indiscriminately.”
Volunteers were supported by Winchester City Council neighbourhood warden, Andrew Murphy, who lent the equipment, and parish groundsman Trevor Veck. Parish lengthsman Peter Wall was on hand to collect the sacks at the end.
“This was a really successful event. Everyone thought it so worthwhile that we'll now be holding similar litter-picks more often,” Councillor Shields said.
