Chilbolton launches 20mph speed limit campaign
10:50am Monday 12th August 2013 in Winchester
FIFTY Chilbolton residents gathered yesterday for the inauguration of their “Chilbolton Twenty is Plenty” campaign.
Caroline Nokes the MP for Romsey and Southampton North was the guest of honour. She said: "I am very happy to support the local campaign for a 20mph speed limit through Chilbolton, and firmly believe that local residents know where there are issues with speeding traffic. The village is very narrow with some tight bends, and clearly there is a good case to reduce the speed limit here."
David Budd, spokesperson for the campaign group, said: “We are seeking to take advantage of the new Department of Transport legislation covering local speed limits that was introduced in January 2013. The policy encourages communities who wish to have a local speed limit to get involved and apply to their local councils. This is exactly what we plan to do.
"The new guidance removes many of the reasons why previous requests were refused whilst at the same time making it simpler and less expensive to implement a 20mph speed limit. Our beautiful village meets all the principal criteria for a 20mph speed limit."
At the weekend the campaigners delivered over 350 leaflets to residents seeking to enlist their support prior to the Parish Council meeting on Tuesday September 3.
Mr Budd said he was encouraged by the initial response which he believes follows the national trend. National opinion polls have found that 80% of the public and 75% of drivers support 20mph as a speed limit on residential streets.
