Winchester theatre company registers as independent charity
12:45pm Monday 12th August 2013 in Winchester
A WINCHESTER theatre company has become fully independent.
Formerly part of Winchester & District Mencap, Blue Apple Theatre, which works with actors with learning disabilities, is now a charity in its own right.
Blue Apple registered as an independent charity in March but has now completed the transfer of assets.
It ends a two-and-a-half-year process to separate from Mencap with the theatre’s finances managed separately for more than two years.
Jane Jessop, founding director, said: “We are all very excited to be embarking on the next stage of the Blue Apple Theatre adventure. There is so much demand for what the theatre company offers from people who want to take part in dance and drama.
“Blue Apple Theatre is helping to pioneer opportunities for performers with learning disabilities not just locally, but nationally. Doors are beginning to open for professional theatre by people with learning disabilities and the future is exciting.”
Blue Apple is also set to launch new sessions in the next school year to allow more people on its waiting list to get involved.
It is another milestone in an eventful year for the theatre, which embarks on its first national tour in October with anti-hate crime drama Living Without Fear.
