WINCHESTER has been celebrating after receiving a Purple Flag for the fourth year in a row.

The flag recognises how safe the nighttime streets are in the city centre.

Cllr Robert Humby, deputy leader of Winchester City Council, said: “Receiving Purple Flag accreditation for the fourth year in a row is a great boost for local businesses and assures all those who work hard to keep the city centre safe that they are doing a fantastic job. “The assessment includes each year a visit to the city’s CCTV control room in Winnall, where staff work 24 hours a day to ensure that Winchester’s streets remain safe.”

Catherine Turness, Winchester Business Improvement District manager, added: “The BID is proud to have played its part in the city receiving this award for its prosperous night time economy. Many BID funded projects, such as the new Business Crime Reduction Partnership and the Winchester Street pastor volunteers, contribute to a safe night out, and the variety of vibrant businesses in Winchester ensures that all ages can have an entertaining evening.”

This year the partnership also included the accident and emergency team at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and the Student Union at University of Winchester.
