THE Combined Cadet Force of Winchester College has handed an £18,000 cheque to the Royal British Legion.

The Mallory Challenge saw 30 pupils travelling to the Lake District to raise funds for the Legion. The boys, aged 15 to 18, completed a 260km triathlon over four days in three relay teams.

The sections on foot were speed marches and the boys scaled Scafell Pike and Helvellyn along the way. The cycle routes linked up the canoeing and the marching and a Mallory Challenge bear was passed between each ten-man-team as they took up their sections of the challenge.

Clare Peppiatt, community fundraiser for the Royal British Legion, said: “The teams faced an extremely physically and mentally tough trial and trained hard for it. We are so proud of their achievement and the substantial amount of money they raised will make a huge difference to the lives of people we can help as a result.”

The team was supported by the Connaught Drill Halls Trust, who funded the purchase of equipment.
