GET your brollies ready - New Year's Day is set to be a wash out.

Yet more wet and windy weather is forecasted to hit Hampshire tomorrow with a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office.

Areas of the county are at further risk of flooding with up to 40mm of rain expected to fall over south facing coats and hills.

Forecasters say winds of up to 60mph could accompany the rain.

It follows more than a week of unsettled weather over the Christmas and New Year period, with stormy conditions and heavy rainfall hitting the area.

The A36 Salisbury Road was shut both ways yesterday morning after a tree came down on a power cable.

Highways Agency workers were called to the large tree near West Wellow, which came down amid storm force winds.

Both car ferry and Red Jet Services between Southampton and Cowes were temporarily suspended as strong winds battered the county.

Commuters faced delays of up to 30 minutes after a train hit a tree branch in Hamble. The train was travelling on the Fareham to Southampton Central line when it struck the branch on the track at around 11.55am. No one was hurt and there was no damage to the carriage.

The Met Office chief forecaster said: “Another active Atlantic frontal system and deepening area of low pressure is expected to push northeastwards across the UK on Wednesday, followed by active troughs.

“A combination of strong winds and very moist air will give locally significant rainfall accumulations especially over south-facing coasts and hills.

“South east England is particularly prone to further flooding. The more persistent rain should clear eastwards later on Wednesday and overnight into Thursday, but heavy showers will follow on.”
