Young culinary talent in Winchester saw an inspirational afternoon at Kings’ School.
The regional Create and Cook Competition has returned for another year, and pupils joined in a workshop with previous finalist Callum Mousley to get inspired for this year’s competition.
The competition encourages young people aged 12-14 to devise a two-course menu using as many local ingredients as possible.
Min Raisman of fit2cook food education organised the workshop. She said: “I’m really encouraged by the level of interest being shown in the competition by Hampshire’s young cooks, and anticipate the standard of entries will be higher than ever.”
The workshop included a demonstration of a local dish and chef Andy MacKenzie, of Lainston House Hotel in Sparsholt, assisted Callum with creating the dish.
He said: “With so much fantastic Hampshire produce around the young cooks are spoilt for choice. By entering the Create and Cook Competition we hope that young cooks will explore their local farmers’ markets, farm shops, gardens and allotments to search out their local flavours.”
Among those gearing up for the competition in June is Harry Duffy, who recently won BBC’s Great Kids Bake Off.
Young cooks can enter the competition through their schools food technology departments, and entries must be placed by March 28.
The top Hampshire cooks will enter a final in May at Highbury College, and the winners of that go on cook against competitors from Sussex and the Isle of Wight in June.
The winners of the competition win their school’s food technology department £1,000, plus get their recipes professionally styled and photographed.
