Winchester Scouts handover cheque to Rotarians
Updated 2:42pm Monday 10th March 2014 in Winchester
WINCHESTER Explorer Scout Alex King recently joined Rotarians at their regular meeting to present a cheque for ShelterBox.
ShelterBox, a Rotary International partner project, provides a first response when disaster strikes.
Each large, green ShelterBox contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, thermal blankets, groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.
ShelterBox teams have recently been active in Bolivia, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Syria as well as their huge response to typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
Alex and his fellow Explorer Scouts raised the money at their recent annual review, and he said: “We wanted to donate to a cause slightly different to our usual set of charities, and ShelterBox is a natural fit. We have lived in tents on our expeditions, and realise what relief this charity can provide to families that have lost their homes.”
His next event will be taking part in a sponsored challenge from Brownsea Island to Weeke to raise funds for the refurbishment of the 1st Winchester Scout Hut.
