PLANNING chiefs have given permission for a site in Southgate Street to be converted into student flats.

Winchester City Councillors agreed with the planning officer’s recommendations for the development at 21 Southgate Street to go ahead which will see 14 new students flats built above the existing Penyards Estate Agents.

The office will remain according to the development plan.

Councillor Frank Pearson said: “My first thought was it sounds a bit crowded but then I considered my granddaughter where there are eight of them living in a much smaller house and they are happier than bugs in a rug so I no longer have any issue with that. I like the fact that the grounds are still available to them for use as well and I think it’s a good amenity but I hope not for parties!

“I rather like this application and I think students will be lucky to live there.”

Councillors voted unanimously in favour for the project to go ahead.

Homes for citizens not more students. The University is rapidly swamping and altering the city and its amenities for its own purposes. It may not totally apply in this instance but I'd like to see the councillors rejecting University ambitions when they're in clear conflict with the tax paying citizens.Councillors do your real job: represent the 'best' interests of your electorate ahead of big influence-money interests - stand up and be counted.

Getting more students into Winchester can only be a good thing for the local economy and culture, but we need more student accommodation. Ideally enough halls of residence to house all students.

I agree we do need more homes for Winchester Residents, however if they built more of these Student Quarters we'd be able to free up some or preferably all of the 3 and 4 Bedroom Houses on our Estates that are currently occupied by these Pesky Students. They can then keep eachother up all night then with their all night parties.
