FLAGS flew at half-mast yesterday for a Hampshire teacher who died over the weekend.

Matt O'Brien was a senior lecturer in the education, health and social care department of the University of Winchester.

Staff and students received an email today (Monday) informing them of his death, and a vigil was held at the campus chapel in the afternoon.

A spokesman for the university could not confirm exactly when Mr O'Brien died, except to say that it was at some point over the weekend. They were also unable to say how he died.

β€œHe was an extremely popular lecturer and colleague, and those who worked with him or who were taught by him will be deeply affected by this loss. The University flag is flying at half-mast and our thoughts and prayers are with Matt and his family,” the spokesman said.

Yesterday some of his students took to Twitter to express their grief.
