AS THE only surviving complete Edwardian Waterworks, it is no surprise people want to learn more about its 114 year history.

The Twyford Waterworks, on Hazeley Road, hosted a Spring Rally on Sunday May 4 with over 400 people attending to view the 60 visiting exhibits and find out more about the historic pumping station - which is now run completely by volunteers.

The Friends of King Alfred Buses, who preserve and maintain the fleet of vehicles that worked in Winchester, ran a regular service from Winchester Railway Station and Broadway to the waterworks to transport visitors.

Matthew Feldwick, event organiser, said it was a great example of two small charities working together.

“It was a superb day, it was an absolute cracker of a rally - one of the best we have ever held,” he said.

“We had in excess of 400 people attend, which for a tiny venue is pretty good going. We had 60 visiting exhibits, from steam traction engines to vintage vehicles. It was a very positive day, and I look forward to the rest of the season.”

The rally included guided tours of the pumping station and the chance to see vintage machinery at work, with steam, diesel, petrol, gas and water powered engines in operation.

There was also a nature trail, tea room and a variety of displays and stalls.
