HUNDREDS of competitors raced through the streets of Winchester to support people fighting cancer.

A total of 480 people took part in this year's Pedal-Paddle-Pace triathlon which raised £30,000 for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Mayor of Winchester Cllr Eileen Berry started the 20km cycle race which set off from the Guildhall towards Palmer's Field. Competitors then abandoned their bikes to run 5km along the Sustrans viaduct before kayaking 2km along the Itchen Navigation.

Since it began nine years ago, the event led by a committee of eight Winchester-based volunteers has raised £100,000 for the charity.

Committee member Blair Dixon said: “This is an event that has gone from strength to strength.

“There have been more people this year than previous years and it's a fantastic cause.

“It's turning into a family event now and although it's billed as a fun event, it is competitive.”

Sarah Davies was named the fastest woman for the second consecutive year, finishing in one hour 14 minutes - three minutes faster than in 2013. The fastest man was Hugh Styles, finishing in one hour six minutes and the fastest team was Heads Resourcing.
