A WICKHAM schoolgirl has met Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery to urge him to help improve school support for children with diabetes.

Megan Horn, aged eight, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes three years ago. She travelled to Westminster with her mother Helen to meet Mr Hollingbery as part of a reception held by Diabetes UK.

The charity is promoting a new law which comes into effect in September which requires all schools in England to provide support for children with conditions such as diabetes.

The law ensures schools consult specialists and provide individual healthcare plans and medical policies for pupils with health problems.

Helen Horn said: “Whilst we are very lucky with the care we get in Megan's school, I know from conversations with other parents in our local support group that this is not always the case.

“As a parent of a child with Type 1 diabetes I know how difficult it can be to feel confident that the school is looking after your child properly.

"If children don't get the care they need it can lead to serious problems with their health and it can also really affect their confidence and self-esteem, at a time when they are already vulnerable."
