A WINCHESTER woman who has the heart disease cardiomyopathy is starting a new support group for people affected by the disease.

Anne Slaughter, a retired nurse from Harestock, is holding the first meeting of the Heart to Heart Support Group on Wednesday, October 15, from 6.45pm at Badger Farm Community Centre.

Anyone affected by cardiomyopathy or heart failure, their family and friends are welcome.

The meeting will look at cardiomyopathy, heart failure and best treatments.

The main speakers will be Dr Dominic Kelly, a consultant cardiologist at the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Robert Hall, chief executive of the Cardiomyopathy Association, will talk about the charity’s services.

The charity, which provides information and support to affected families, has cardiomyopathy support nurses, holds information days and has a network of affected volunteers who support others by telephone and email.

Cardiomyopathy affects people of all ages, including babies, and is usually inherited. It is the biggest medical cause of sudden death in those under 35, but with appropriate treatment, most affected people can live a long and full life.

Ms Slaughter started feeling breathless and lacking in energy three years ago. Her doctor initially told her to try to get fitter and though she tried, she had to give up.

Tests at the end of 2012 showed she had dilated cardiomyopathy. This type causes the heart to enlarge and pump less effectively.

She said: “My heart was very enlarged and my prognosis was not good. It made me quite depressed. However, I got in touch with the Cardiomyopathy Association who put me in touch with others who are affected and I found this very helpful.”

Last April she was given a biventricular pacemaker that makes the different chambers of her heart beat together and can improve heart function.

Ms Slaughter said: “Tests this year have shown a big improvement in the condition of my heart. My symptoms have also eased. I am much less breathless, have more energy and am much happier. I am so grateful for the wonderful care I have received from Winchester hospital.”
