A WINCHESTER theatre has launched a new scheme so that far-out residents don’t miss performances.

Theatre Royal has partnered with the county council to launch a free bus for people living in rural areas of Winchester.

The return trip is included in the cost of a theatre ticket, and hopes to encourage more visitors by making transport and parking less of a problem.

Ed Simpson, head of participation at the theatre, said: “We don’t want residents in the southern parishes to miss out on the fantastic range of performances in the city simply because they can’t get here or want to enjoy a drink on their night out.”

Villages included are: Bishop’s Waltham; Southwick; West of Waterlooville; Hambledon; Upham; Soberton; Owslebury; Droxford; Colden Common; Meonstoke; West Meon; Twyford; Warnford and Otterbourne.

Winchester City Council leader Rob Humby has backed the scheme, alongside councillors Patricia Stallard and Roger Huxstep.

There are 16 places per bus, and the service is only available for select performances.

Shows included are: ‘She Stoops to Conquer’, on October 16, dance show ‘Park’, on October 21, and the theatre’s pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’, on January 3.
