THE King Alfred Trophy will again be fought for by local cricketers today at North Walls Recreation Ground in Winchester.

Four local teams will compete for the trophy: The Racqueteers, St Giles Hill Cricket Club, The Black Boy and The Royal Hampshire County Hospital CC.

Matches start at 11am and continue throughout the day.

The winning team will be presented with the trophy by General Sir Antony Walker at the end of the day's play; approximately 6pm.

Spectators are welcome, and are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy watching the cricket.

The first King Alfred Trophy was contested last year at Save The Rec's Grand Day Out which highlighted the importance of preserving the green space at the rec from development.

The campaign group received the welcome news at the end of last year that this location would no longer be considered as an option for the siting of a new leisure centre.

The city council currently proposes to rebuild or refurbish the existing River Park Leisure Centre, or create new facilities at Bar End.
