A FORMER shadow minister is visiting Winchester on Thursday to give a lecture on the future of socialism in England.
Tristram Hunt, a published historian and shadow education secretary under Ed Miliband, will revisit George Orwell's The Lion and the Unicorn, which argued in 1941 for a marriage of patriotism and left-wing politics.
He will address Winchester University's Centre for English Identity and Politics, launched last year by former Labour minister John Denham.
The free lecture is entitled The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and England in the 21st Century. Guests are asked to register online at winchester.ac.uk/hunt or by emailing alison.palmer@winchester.ac.uk.
Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.
